Coronavirus infection can badly affect the body as well as the mind. According to recent research published in The Lancet Public Health journal, serious patients of corona are at higher risk of long-term mental health problems.
The research looked at mental health problems related to corona such as depression, sleep disturbances, and anxiety. For this, people from Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, and Norway were studied for 16 months.
The research also included corona patients and those who never got infected. Out of 2,47,249 people, 9,979 i.e. 4% got corona between February 2020 and August 2021.
According to scientists, people affected by corona are at higher risk of developing mental problems. While 11.3% of those without infection experienced symptoms of depression, 20.2% of those suffering from corona had these symptoms. During this, the sleep quality of 29.4% of people without infection and 23.8% of corona patients deteriorated.
Research says that hospitalized patients have worse mental health than patients who have recovered at home. Along with this, people who spent a week or more in bed due to corona infection increased the risk of depression and anxiety by 50-60%.
Professor Unnoor says that now we are in the third year of the corona epidemic. In such a situation, it is important to keep an eye on other serious diseases after a corona. This will enable people to get timely treatment.
Professor Unnur Anna Valdimarsdottir of the University of Iceland, involved in the research, says that this is the first research to look at long-term mental problems in severe corona patients. This study suggests that your mental health is affected depending on the level of corona infection.
